WHEN PURCHASING A NEW BIKE to hit the trails this summer, founder Scott Cowan strongly recommends getting "fitted by an expert," rather than just buying off the shelf at a department store, because bikes come in a variety of shapes and sizes--10, to be exact.

For the casual rider, he suggests comfort bikes and hybrids ($319-$479), a cross between a mountain and road bike, designed with big, cushy seats. But for the enthusiast, Cowan suggests performance hybrids ($419-$789) built with faster aerodynamics and smaller yet still comfortable seats.

Cowan, who first opened the bicycle and repair shop in Medina in 1992 and has grown to three locations, advises wearing comfortable clothing and shoes or padded shorts or underwear for longer rides, and always a helmet, no matter your age.

"We preach a good attitude and sense of adventure," he says. 19955 Detroit Road, Rocky River, 440-356-5705, centurycycles.com
