FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: APRIL 7, 2012

Medina Bicycle Fair on May 1 will help residents get ready
to bike to school, work or just for fun

Inaugural Medina Bike To School Challenge scheduled for May 7-25

MEDINA, Ohio – Get your bicycle ready to roll this spring at the Medina Bicycle Fair on Tuesday, May 1, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Medina High School, in the Senior Commons Area (777 E. Union Street in Medina; park in Lot D.) This event is free and open to the public.

Residents are invited to bring their bicycles for a free safety inspection, the chance to win a bicycle helmet, and learn about the benefits of bicycling and the Medina Bike To School Challenge.

The Medina Bicycle Fair is part of the inaugural Medina Bike To School Challenge sponsored by Century Cycles on May 7-25, 2012, which strives to inspire over 1,800 students at Root and Claggett Middle Schools to ride their bikes to school as much as possible for three weeks -- to improve their health, help the environment, inspire the community to use a bicycle for short trips around town, have fun and win prizes.

At the Medina Bicycle Fair:

  • Professional bicycle mechanics from Century Cycles bicycle store in Medina will provide free bicycle safety inspections and display essential bike commuting gear.
  • Century Cycles and Raleigh Bicycles are teaming up to give away 20 bicycle helmets to the first 20 families who attend (limit: one helmet per family).
  • Medina and Montville Police Departments will assist with bicycle registrations.
  • Medina Bike to School Challenge organizers will be available to answer questions about the program.
  • Bike Cleveland will have a booth about its programs and bicycle advocacy efforts.

Century Cycles (www.centurycycles.com) is teaming up with the Medina middle schools to organize the Bike To School Challenge, along with other sponsors including Raleigh Bicycles and Fuel Up To Play 60. Sponsors provide prizes as ride incentives – the more the students ride their bicycles, the more chances they have to win prizes, including two new Raleigh bicycles per school.

The Medina City Schools (www.medinacityschooldistrict.org) is committee to assisting students in making healthy living choices and understanding the importance of healthy eating and adequate exercise. The district has a number of initiatives such as the Fuel Up To Play 60 program that help to foster a culture of healthy living.

“We feel that this is a great event for the students as well as the teachers, especially due to the fact that the students only receive nine weeks of physical education, down from 18 weeks. Recent studies have concluded that children should be physically active a minimum of 60 minutes a day,” said Melanie Condosta, a physical education teacher at Root Middle School and one of Medina Bike To School Challenge’s organizers. “In addition to learning lifelong fitness, the students learn the effect their choice of transportation has on the environment. We’re hopeful this event will be so successful that students, parents and teacher can look forward to Bike To School Challenge every school year.”
