Bay Village School News: Bay Village Citizen, Project of the Year

From the Winter 2010 edition of the Bay Village School News:

Many gear up for Bike-to-School Challenge

Bay Village Schools students in grades 5 through 12 logged 37,042 miles biking to school during the Bike-to-School Challenge in May 2009.

With more than 1200 students and 90 staff members participating in the event, Bay Village residents witnessed droves of bicycles riding to school and masses of bikes parked outside the schools during the several weeks of the spring Challenge.

The event grew out of a Bay High student-driven initiative in 2007 encouraging students to bike to school to protest rising gasoline prices and to highlight the need to decrease dependency on fossil fuels. Bay High alumnus, Scott Cowan, owner of Century Cycles in Rocky River, took on sponsorship of the program (and brought in co-sponsor Chipotle), offered prizes, and encouraged a participation competition between Bay High and Bay Middle School.

Citizen/Project of the Year RECEPTION Sunday March 14 2-4 p.m. at the Bay Village Community House.
