West Shore Sun: Now that spring has sprung, find your own pedal power

Now that spring has sprung, find your own pedal power

By Christine Lee

Spring has finally arrived in our city. Well at least in theory. Even though the calendar says it's spring, there's always that chance of a snowstorm in April. But I am going to ignore that fact, and focus instead on signs of spring around town.

Outside of spring flowers poking through the ground and people donning spring coats and shoes, I continue to see lots of bikes. So what better time to consider investing in a new bike?

Now, I am not suggesting you look at the Sunday fliers to see what Wal-Mart or Target has to offer. I am talking about making an investment in a quality bike, that more than likely will have a lifetime guarantee on the frame and some kind of warranty on the parts.

A trained mechanic would be the craftsman that built your bike. In addition, another mechanic would be on site to fix your bike should anything break.

These types of mechanics sometimes spend a lifetime learning their craft. Plus, you would have the chance to speak at length to a professional in the field who would steer you to the right size and style of bike for you. That would be better than paging a Wal-Mart employee to the bike department, to inquire if a certain color or style is in stock, don't you think?

Our city has many wonderful bicycle shops where personal and professional service is a philosophy. One of those places is Century Cycles at 19955 Detroit Road in Rocky River. The phone number is (440) 356-5705. The shop also has locations in Peninsula and Medina.

According to owner Scott Cowan, the shop will be celebrating its 17th anniversary this year. It's having a spring break sale April 2-5. If you buy a bike, you will get a discount on fun and practical accessories for it, plus free tune-ups for the first year.
