Bike Shop: Century Cycles

The first thing to consider when bike shopping is deciding where to buy, says Century Cycles owner Scott Cowan. A trip to a big-box retailer could save a few dollars but may not yield the most suitable bicycle. "You're going to get one size fits all," Cowan says. "A bike shop like ours has lots of different size bikes that fit all different heights of people and lots of different styles of bikes that will accomodate what riding style you're doing." The Rocky River retailer, which has locations in Medina and Peninsula, can get you started for as little at $300. There's plenty more gear available, from shoes and shorts to odometers. But the only real necessity, Cowan says, is a helmet. Maps are also available, and the cycling enthusiasts on staff can recommend roads to avoid -- Lorain Road, state Route 83 -- as well as those that offer optimal riding conditions, such as two Cowan favorites: Lorain County's Walker and Lake roads. 19955 Detroit Road, Rocky River, 440-356-5705, centurycycles.com
