Thanks to WEWS News Channel 5's Kristin Byrne for stopping by Bay Village Middle School to cover the first day of the 2013 Bike To School Challenge.
BAY VILLAGE, Ohio - Starting Monday, thousands of area high school and middle school students will take part in the "Bike to School Challenge."
[In] May, students in Rocky River, Bay Village and Medina school districts are taking part in the program, which last a few weeks.
The program started several years ago. It promotes healthy living and helps the environment. Plus, students save their parents money in the process.
Students receive what's called a "ride card," which they get stamped each day they bike to school. They can even win prizes for participating.
Bay Village Middle School teacher, Lawrence Kuh, said the program expands each year.
"We started in the first few years maybe with about two to three hundred riders per day. The next year, 550 riders a day. We had 622 on our biggest day," Kuh said.
Last year, students biked more than 50,000 miles. They burned nearly one million calories and saved their parents $8,000.
