Century Cycles Plans Snow Biking Events in the Cuyahoga Valley

Peninsula, OH – Snow bikes are the hottest thing to hit the bicycling world since the mountain bike boom of the 1980's. Century Cycles bicycle shop wants to help everyone get a taste of this new trend by partnering with two other local organizations in the Cuyahoga Valley for two unique events. Both events will allow participants to test-ride snow bikes using the shop's demo/rental fleet. In addition, people with their own snow bikes will have the chance to ride on trails normally closed to bicycles.

A snow bike is like a regular mountain bike, except with a frame that is specially designed to accommodate extremely wide tires, as wide as four or five inches. The bikes also have a very wide range of gears to help riders navigate over rough and steep trails. Because of the very fat tires, snow bikes are sometimes referred to as "fat bikes."

"We sold our first snow bike back in 2007, and their popularity has, er, snowballed ever since," said Scott Cowan, owner of Century Cycles. "With the notoriously harsh winters of Northeast Ohio, the snow bike has allowed casual riders and hardcore cyclists alike to extend their riding season. Once people try a fat bike, they discover that the bikes are so much fun, many end up riding them year-round."

Snow Bikin' Down on the Farm

On Sunday, February 12, 2017, Century Cycles partners with Hale Farm & Village to bring you "Snow Bikin' Down on the Farm." From 12:00 noon until 4:00pm, participants can test-ride snow bikes on a short demo course, or ride their own snow bikes on the trails and fields around the historic property. There is no cost to attend, and no pre-registration is necessary. The cafe inside the Hale Farm & Village visitor center will be open for participants to purchase food and beverages, and warm up around the fireplace.

Hale Farm & Village is located at 2686 Oak Hill Road, Peninsula, Ohio, 44264.

The event will be cancelled if there is rain, lack of snow, or ground conditions that are not suitable for bicycling. Please call the Century Cycles store in Peninsula at 330-657-2209 for the latest updates. Fattyshack III

Century Cycles first partnered with Brandywine Country Club in 2015 for a snow biking event, and the response was overwhelming. Back for its third year, and in keeping with the theme of riding fat bikes on a golf course, the event is called "Fattyshack III." It will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 12:00 to 4:00pm. The Brandywine Country Club golf course is located at 5555 Akron-Peninsula Road, Peninsula, Ohio 44264.

There will be two off-road bicycling courses available. A short "demo" loop on the Par 3 course will be used for those wishing to test-ride Century Cycles' snow bikes. A longer trail marked along the regular golf course will be open to those who have their own snow bikes. Participants can ride the demo loop for no charge; there will be a $5 charge for those wishing to utilize the longer course with their own bikes.

The Fattyshack III registration area will be at the Brandywine Wine Bar, also known as the Brandywine Par 3 Clubhouse, located on the west side of Akron-Peninsula Road. Attendees can park at no cost in the club's main parking lot near the main clubhouse on the east side of Akron-Peninsula Road, and use the tunnel walkway over to the Brandywine Wine Bar.

The Brandywine Wine Bar will be open, where participants may purchase beverages and snacks. The fire pit outside the Wine Bar will be going, where you can huddle for warmth in-between snow bike rides and trade tales of epic winter cycling adventures.

The event will be cancelled or postponed if there is rain, a lack of snow, or ground conditions that are not suitable for bicycling. A backup date of Saturday, February 25, 2017 has been set. Please call the Century Cycles store in Peninsula at 330-657-2209 for the latest updates.
